José Muguerza (born September 15, 1911 in Bilbao , † October 23, 1980 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish football player who mostly played in defensive midfield and worked as a coach after his active career .

Life

Athletic Bilbao

Born in Basque, he played for the entire first epoch of the Spanish Primera División (from its introduction in 1928 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936) for his hometown club Athletic Bilbao , with whom he won four Spanish championships and four cups during these eight years .

Muguerza made his first division debut in a Basque derby against San Sebastián held on April 28, 1929 , which his team won 4-2.

National team

The talented defensive player made his first international appearance on June 14, 1930, when the Spanish national soccer team lost 2-0 to the Czechoslovak national team in Prague .

The highlight of his international career was his participation in the soccer world championship in 1934 , in which Muguerza played all three games of Spain and only narrowly failed because of the host and eventual world champion Italy.

His last international match took place on May 3, 1936 in Bern in Spain's 2-0 victory over Switzerland.

Mexico

The civil war spreading over his home country brought football to a standstill for three years and so Muguerza joined the Basque national team , which traveled to Mexico in 1937 and took part in the game of the Mexican league in the 1938/39 season under the name Euzkadi .

He then played for Mexico City- based Real Club España , with whom he won the Mexican championship twice.

Unlike many of his compatriots who returned to their homeland sometime after the end of the civil war, Muguerza stayed in Mexico for the rest of his life, where he coached CF Monterrey on his return to the Mexican second league in 1952/53 and died on October 23, 1980 at the age of 69.
