José Padilla Sánchez (born May 28, 1889 in Almería , † October 25, 1960 in Madrid ), also known as Maestro Padilla , was a Spanish composer and pianist . He was best known for his song Valencia .

Life

After taking his first music lessons in his home town, he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid and in Italy.

In 1906 his first Zarzuela La Mala Hembra appeared , a one-act play based on a libretto by Ventura de la Vega. Further stage works followed. After the First World War he stayed in Paris a lot and wrote operettas , revues and songs for the Moulin Rouge , among others , which made him internationally known. In 1920 his song My Spanish Rose was used by Jerome Kern for his Broadway musical The Night Boat . The pasodoble song Valencia from Zarzuela La Bien Amada , composed in 1924, was a big hit in a recording by Paul Whiteman & his Orchestra in 1926 . Other successes were Ça c'est Paris , El Relicario and La Violetera , which Charlie Chaplin used in 1931 as a film score for city ​​lights .

In 1950 he had another great success with the Zarzuela La Hechicera en Palacio . 10 years later he died in Madrid.
