José Rafael Meza (born July 6, 1920 in Cartago , † July 15, 1988 ) was a Costa Rican soccer player in the position of a striker , who was the top scorer of the Costa Rican with 13 goals in 1940 and 20 goals in the 1941/42 season Was the top scorer in the Mexican Football League . Following his active career, he coached various soccer teams.

Meza, also known in his home country under the nicknames Fello and El Maestro, and in Mexico under the nickname Tico (the name for Costa Ricans) is considered one of the best Costa Rican soccer players of all time.

He began his football career in the youth department of his home club Ciclón Negro .

In 1937 he moved to the first division club CS Cartaginés , with whom he won the championship in 1940 and with his 13 hits (in nine games) had a significant share in the title win and was also top scorer of the Costa Rican league.

For the 1941/42 season he moved to the Mexican Football League, where he again won the top scorer's crown in the UD Moctezuma jersey .

In 1942 he moved to the Argentine Football League , where he played for Estudiantes de La Plata for the next two years and scored a total of 33 goals.

During the 1944/45 season he returned to Mexico for UD Moctezuma, which played in the Mexican professional league introduced the previous year . His first goal in this league he scored in the home game against León , which was played on November 12, 1944 and ended 2-2. The other goal for Moctezuma was scored by his brother Jaime.

Before the 1945/46 season he moved to the Mexican capital club Atlante , where he celebrated the much-cited “debut made to measure” when he scored four goals in his new employer's season opener at CD Tampico , which was won 10: 3. His teammate Horacio Casarín scored even more goals, winning five times in this game. He played for Atlante for about three years and then returned for a few months to his former club Moctezuma in Orizaba , before returning to his home country.

In 1950 he left Costa Rica again and played one season for the Colombian university team Universidad de Bogotá .

In 1951 he returned to his hometown club CS Cartaginés, for which he worked for several years as a player- coach. In between he worked temporarily in Honduras , also as a player- coach , for Aduana de Tela .

In the 1955 season he ended his active career in the service of CS Herediano by winning another championship title.

In 1941 he won the championship of Central America and the Caribbean with the Costa Rican national team and was also the most successful goalscorer at this tournament.
