José Varela (born April 23, 1960 in Cances , Spain ) is a former German - Spanish professional boxer and European champion.

Life

José Varela moved with his parents from La Coruña to Wiesbaden in 1970 , later he lived in Rüsselsheim , where his career as a boxer began. In November 1984 he took German citizenship .

Amateur career

José Varela boxed as an amateur for CSC Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. On 23 October 1981, he suggested to the cheers of the spectators the German champions Reinhard Jassmann difficult KO .

Professional career

On February 26, 1983 he made his professional debut and knocked out Uwe Wissenbach in Mannheim in the first round. In January 1985, José Varela won the German welterweight championship after beating Tony Habermayer on points .

On October 10, 1986 he won against Brahim Messaoudi by knockout in the fifth round and thus secured the vacant European welterweight title. However, Varela already lost the title when he defended his title for the first time when he was completely exhausted from the fight against Alfonso Redondo in the tenth round.

In 1989 he won the German championship belt again, this time in the light middleweight division, and then got another EM opportunity. Varela lost to Edip Sekowitsch by knockout in the second round. He then ended his boxer career. In 1994 he tried a comeback in the framework of a mask world championship fight, but went hard against British Chris Saunders in the second round. José Varela was managed by Eberhard Thust during his professional career and was considered one of the few German professional boxers with an international level.

After boxing

In 1997 he was on trial in Alicante for manslaughter. He was charged with killing an innkeeper in Torrevieja in October 1996 with a fist. He was acquitted of manslaughter charges.
