José Vicente Ortuño (born September 9, 1935 in Albacete , † 1998 ) was a Spanish author.

Life

His most famous book is his autobiography My Companion is the Knife . It was published by Fritz Molden in Germany in 1972. In the French original, the title is Les Racines amères (The bitter roots). In Spain itself, the book did not appear until 1980 after the end of the Franco regime.

This book describes his life story and the relationship to his family in the turmoil after the Spanish Civil War . In particular, the family chasm between political and social conflicts and violence that has ruled his life since childhood dominated his life. That is why he says of himself in the book: “I have no other family than my revenge and no other companion than my knife.” His escape into French exile is a dramatic chapter.

As an individual, he was then significantly shaped in France by the Foreign Legion . He describes his experiences there in his second book, Legion of the Lost .
