Jos Namur
Joseph Pierre François Namur (pronunciation: Namür) (born January 15, 1823 in Echternach ; † February 24, 1892 ibid) was a Luxembourg Liebig student, pharmacist and high school professor.
Life
Jos Namur studied with Justus Liebig in Gießen in the summer semester of 1845 and in the winter semester of 1845/46 . Along with Karl Stammer, he is one of the two Luxembourg Liebig students.
Actually, Namur, who was authorized to practice the art of pharmacy in Luxembourg in June 1846 , should from now on earn his living in his father's pharmacy in Echternach. However, the job does not seem to have really appealed to him, so that in 1848 he took a position at the Echternach Progymnasium. He later also taught at the Echternach agricultural school.
In addition to teaching, Namur was active in many other areas. He was school inspector (1858-1881), member of the Echternach city council (1870-1875), member of the administrative board of the Prince Heinrich Railway (from 1872/73). He was also a member of the historical section of the Grand Ducal Institute . In 1886 he developed a method to control phylloxera , which he applied for a patent. Above all, however, he published a number of scientific articles, particularly in the fields of chemistry and geology .
