biography

After studying composition, piano, organ as well as pedagogy and theology, he taught music pedagogy at the Lemmensinstitut of the University of Leuven. He also held teaching positions at the following institutions: Institut Supérieur de Musique in Namur (Belgium), Institut Musical de Méthodes Actives in Lyon (France), University of Southern California in Los Angeles (USA). Jos Wuytack was a student and friend of Carl Orff . In France he published the Orff-Schulwerk , an inductive music pedagogical concept for children developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman , which emphasizes the unity of music, language and movement.

The original, five-volume Orff-Schulwerk contains hardly any pedagogical or didactic information. The term Schulwerk is misleading. Orff himself did not think of lessons in mainstream schools, but assumed courses at music schools. Wuytack's achievement now lies in having developed a system for music lessons in kindergarten, primary and secondary school that can be implemented in everyday life. With this in mind, he composed numerous songs and play pieces for children and young people. Believing in the timelessness of the Orff-Schulwerk, he also includes jazz, rock, pop, repetitive and serial music. Jos Wuytack was honored with the Pro Merito Award of the Carl Orff Foundation (Munich) in 1996 for his scientific and educational achievements .

Jos Wuytack made a new contribution with the development of the musicograms : They enable the students to actively listen to music. Theoretical remarks by Wuytack on the method of the musicogram and the system of active listening to music have been published in Dutch (1972), French (1974), Portuguese (1995) and Spanish (1996).

In conferences and courses in 50 countries, Wuytack campaigned for the education and training of educators, teachers and music teachers. Since 1973 he has been teaching regularly in Spain and Portugal.

As a composer, Wuytack has a comprehensive oeuvre: songs with and without accompaniment as well as pieces for Orff instruments, recorder, percussion instruments and symphony orchestra. This work has been partially relocated. Wuytack has authored numerous books and articles on music education that have been published in various countries. His children's songs with movements have been published in six languages.

In 1992, Wuytack founded a society for music education in Portugal, the Associação Wuytack de Pedagogia Musical (AWPM). This society organizes advanced training, publishes books and CDs, sponsors concerts with children and young people and maintains contact with national and international institutions. A compilation of Jos Wuytack's publications and a list of articles about him can be found on the company's website.
