Saint Sebastien

Josaphat Araldi , also Josaphat de Araldis , (traceable in 1519 and 1520 in Montechiarugolo and Parma ), was an Italian painter .

Little is known about Josaphat Araldi. In old documents he is only mentioned twice: 1519 in Montechiarugolo as Maestro Iosaphat depintore and 1520 in Parma as Araldus Iosaphat pictor Vicinie Sancti Benedicti . Nothing is known about his origins and training, but his works show a strong influence of the Venetian painting school, in particular of Giovanni Bellini . In addition, he was most likely based on the northern European printmaking that was widespread in northern Italy , especially by Albrecht Dürer , from which he mainly adopted elements for depicting landscapes.

There is a single painting by his hand, signed Iossaphat de Araldis opus , depicting Saint Sebastian , which is now in Parma. On the basis of this work, art scholars tried to assign further works to him, of which the fresco with the Holy Family in Parma Cathedral, painted in 1503, is the earliest.

There does not seem to be any family relationship with the painter Alessandro Araldi , who is also active in Parma .
