Josef August Stark (born March 6, 1782 in Graz ; † June 23, 1838 there ) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and art teacher.

Born the son of a coachman, Josef August Stark initially studied law. He then attended the Graz State Drawing Academy (Landeskunstschule). From 1806 to 1815 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna a . a. with Hubert Maurer , Franz Caucig and Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder .

Even during his studies he worked as a portrait painter. In 1817 and 1826 he went on study trips to Italy. As successor to Andreas Hardter , Stark was appointed professor and director of the State Drawing Academy in Graz in 1817. In 1818 he also took over the management of the gallery. He was considered to be the main representative of classicism in Styria. In class, he preferred copying from templates. Landscape painting was neglected. Stark was supported by Count Ignaz Maria von Attems-Heiligenkreuz .

Stark was a passionate art collector who committed around two hundred paintings by old Italian, Dutch and German masters to the picture gallery in his will. The paintings are now in the art collection of the Universalmuseum Joanneum . He donated an art prize for the students of the drawing academy. Stark was made an honorary member of the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia .
