The son of the bookseller Lambert Bachem (1789-1854) attended high school and then joined his father's JP Bachem Verlag , which he took over after his father went bankrupt in 1840. In the following years, Joseph Bachem was involved in several Catholic newspaper projects, including the Deutsche Volkshalle , which appeared from 1849 to 1855. With the experience he gained, in 1860 he founded the Catholic daily newspaper "Kölnische Blätter", which appeared from 1868 under the title Kölnische Volkszeitung . In addition, he published collections of novels and short stories as well as translations of primarily English literature, making Bachem Verlag one of the centers of Catholic journalism in Germany. Even before his death, he passed the business on to his sons Franz-Xaver (1857–1936), Robert (1861–1942) and Fridolin (1863–1920).

Joseph Bachem was buried in the family grave in Cologne's Melaten cemetery (Hall 22 (V)).
