Josef Hermann Beckmann

Josef Hermann Beckmann (born January 14, 1902 in Emsdetten , Westphalia , † June 22, 1971 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German librarian .

Life

Josef Hermann Beckmann studied Catholic theology, history and philosophy in Münster and Freiburg im Breisgau . He passed his first theological examination in 1925 and received his doctorate in Freiburg in 1927.

He then joined the library service in 1928 as a volunteer at the University Library in Münster and in 1929 moved to the Berlin State Library , where he passed the examination for the higher library service in 1930. From 1930 he worked at the Freiburg University Library , first as a library assistant, from 1933 as a non-scheduled librarian, from 1935 as a regular librarian, from 1939 as a library council, from 1949 as the first library council, and from 1954 until his retirement in 1967 as its director.

He researched and published in the field of church history as well as the history of the University and the University Library of Freiburg.
