Josef Hofinger (born July 20, 1901 in St. Johann in Tirol ; † July 24, 1990 in Mutters ) was director of the Linz Study Library , the Salzburg Study Library and the Innsbruck University Library .

Hofinger studied history, geography and German literature and received his doctorate in 1925 from the University of Innsbruck . In 1926 he joined the Innsbruck University Library. From 1928 to 1930 he worked at the Graz University Library , from where he returned to the Innsbruck University Library. 1935–38 he was head of the Linz study library. During the Nazi period he was banned from working as a librarian. During this time he managed an electricity company in the municipality of St. Johann in Tirol and in 1945 also became its first mayor after the war. In the same year it was accepted at the Austrian National Library in Vienna. In 1946 he became director of the Salzburg Study Library and in 1951 of the Innsbruck University Library. Hofinger retired in 1966. In the same year he received the medal "Bene merito" from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and in 1967 the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st class .

Josef Hofinger is buried in the Wilten cemetery in Innsbruck.
