Josef Kompalla

Josef Jupp Kompalla (born March 13, 1936 in Katowice , Upper Silesia ) is a former German - Polish ice hockey player and referee . He is a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame (since 2003) and the Hall of Fame Germany as well as the holder of the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Career

As a player

Even as a player he was able to celebrate some successes. In his youth he played for Gwardia Kattowitz , between 1954 and 1958 for Gornik Kattowitz in the first Polish league. For the Polish national team , he ran twice. He also played two international B matches for Germany after his escape . In the ice hockey Bundesliga he was employed by Preussen Krefeld and played 139 league games.

As an arbitrator

After the end of his playing career in the summer of 1969, Kompalla switched to the refereeing of the German Ice Hockey Federation . Until 1992 he was a referee in over 2,000 first division games and 157 international games, including the Olympic Games (1976, 1980, 1984), World Championships (1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986) or the Spengler Cup . The high point of his career is seen as leading the crucial game of the 1972 Summit Series between the USSR and Canada. As part of the Germany Cup in 1992, he ended his career playing the Soviet Union against Czechoslovakia in Stuttgart. In the 70s and 80s he was voted referee of the year 13 times in a row by readers of ice hockey magazine .

Even after that, Kompalla remained in ice hockey by training junior referees and the role of referee observer at world championships. To this day he is a DEL referee observer, member of the DEL disciplinary committee and leads celebrity and anniversary games.

His daughter Nicole was also an ice hockey referee in the Bundesliga at the end of the 1980s.
