Josef Korsten (born July 1, 1957 in Gevenich near Linnich ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1999 to 2015 he was the first full-time mayor of the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Radevormwald .

Life

Josef Korsten grew up in Geilenkirchen . In 1975 he became a member of the SPD. From 1979 to 1987 he was a member of the Geilenkirchen City Council. From 1976 to 1981 he studied social sciences (political science, sociology, economics) and English at RWTH Aachen University with the first state examination. He then worked as a trainee lawyer with the completion of the 2nd state examination. In 1985 he was awarded a Dr. phil. is doing her doctorate with a dissertation on right-wing populism and neoconservatism in today's USA . He then worked at the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia as a research assistant for a member of parliament, and from 1987 as a full-time manager for the SPD parliamentary group in the Wuppertal city ​​council. Since 1990 he worked for the city of Radevormwald, where he was first deputy until 1997 , then city ​​director until 1999 .

In the mayoral election in Radevormwald on September 12, 1999, he won the first ballot as a candidate of the SPD with 44.29 percent of the vote against five other candidates with a turnout of 57.60 percent. Korsten won the runoff election on September 26, 1999 with 65.28 percent of the vote against Paul Jürgen Hanßen ( CDU ) and a turnout of 46.15 percent, thus taking over the office of Mayor Erni Huckenbeck (CDU). Re-election on September 26, 2004 was won by SPD candidate Korsten with 64.10 percent of the vote against CDU challenger Erni Huckenbeck and the FDP candidate with a turnout of 55.01 percent in the first ballot. In the renewed re-election on August 30, 2009, in which no run-off election was planned, Josef Korsten was confirmed - this time as a single candidate - against four other applicants with 33.50 percent of the vote and a turnout of 57.78 percent. In June 2014, he announced that he would no longer run for the 2015 mayoral election. His successor as Mayor of Radevormwald was Johannes Mans (Alternative List). During his entire tenure as mayor, SPD member Korsten chaired a city council in which the CDU was the strongest parliamentary group.
