Josef Niederhammer

Josef Niederhammer (born September 27, 1954 in Linz ) is an Austrian double bass player .

Career

Josef Niederhammer learned violin and cello from the age of 6 and switched to double bass at the age of 14. He completed his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 1977 with honors. During his studies he had his first engagements with renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra .

Orchestral activities

Niederhammer was active as a double bass player in many orchestras, particularly his work as a solo bassist in the Bavarian State Orchestra Munich from 1978 to 1986 and the subsequent employment as a solo bassist with the Munich Philharmonic (until 1991).

Teaching

From 1979 to 1984 Niederhammer had a teaching position at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich , after which he was a lecturer at the Munich University of Music for 11 years . Since 1991 he has been a full professor for double bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . From 2001 to 2004 he was also a visiting professor at the Royal Northern College of Music Manchester.
