Josef Oberkofler (born December 25, 1900 in Linz ; † December 22, 1959 there ) was an Austrian lawyer and Nazi functionary. From 1939 to 1945 he was District Administrator of Schärding.

Oberkofler attended high school in Linz and in 1918 volunteered for the Austrian Rifle Regiment 2 in Brno as a one-year volunteer , which is why he was only able to take his Matura in 1920. He then worked from 1920 as an employee at the Federal Railway Directorate in Linz and became dispatcher in Imst in autumn 1922 . After about a year in this position, he resigned his position and from 1924 studied law at the University of Innsbruck . In 1929 he received his doctorate in law from the university .

After his legal practice at the regional and district court in Linz, Oberkofler worked for the law firm of Linz lawyer Dr. Beuerle. Due to his political commitment to the National Socialist German Workers' Party , he was struck off the Austrian list of lawyers in 1936 as a punishment. In August 1937 he found a job at the Munich Higher Regional Court and after the annexation of Austria returned to Austria, where he joined the Linz-Land district administration . He remained a civil servant until June 1945, initially as a provisional government commissioner. In 1939 he was transferred to Schärding, where he was provisional district administrator from 1939. On March 18, 1940, he was finally appointed district administrator of Schärding.

Politics and functions

During his studies, Oberkofler was a member of the Pappenheimer academic fraternity, in August 1931 he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 514.486), whereby he had already been active in the National Socialist movement from 1921. From 1929, for example, he was a member of the hunter battalion of the Linz homeland security and in August 1931 became political leader in the Linz district management. He was also active as a district speaker, legal advisor and member of the NS cultural community in the NSDAP. He was also a member of the Kampfbund for German Culture and, from 1937, the SS .

After the National Socialists came to power , Oberkofler was promoted to SS-Untersturmführer in 1938 , where he held this rank until 1945. He headed the "Race and Culture" department at SS-Sturmbann I / 37 in Linz.
