Josef Opperbeck

Josef Opperbeck (born July 18, 1900 in Beckum ; † 1973 ) was a German businessman and SS leader.

Life

After finishing school, Opperbeck completed a degree in economics, which he did not finish. He then worked as a banker at Dresdner Bank and then at Iduna Insurance as an authorized signatory and most recently as a member of the board.

Opperbeck was a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 4.158.381) and SS (SS number 155.834). In the Waffen-SS , Opperbeck achieved the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer of the reserve in 1943 .

After the outbreak of World War II , Opperbeck did his military service in the Wehrmacht . In the spring of 1940 Opperbeck was accepted into the Waffen SS and moved to the SS main office for administration and economics . There he was employed in the general trust administration for building materials production and from 1941 was responsible for the confiscated brickworks in southern Styria .

After founding the SS Economic and Administrative Main Office (WVHA) in February 1942, Opperbeck headed the Office WI (Stones and Earths - Reich) of the Office Group W. together with Karl Mummenthey until July 18, 1942 .

After Kurt May's departure from the management of the W IV Office (woodworking companies) of the WVHA Office Group, Opperbeck took over this post from mid-July 1942 and held it until the end of the war. From the summer of 1942 Opperbeck was also Oswald Pohl's liaison officer to the offices of the Reich Protector in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . In addition, Opperbeck was the general representative of the SS operations Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke and several wood processing companies.

Opperbeck, who did not have to answer in court at the end of the war, returned to leading positions in the private sector in post-war Germany.
