Edmund Cooper , pseudonym Broderick Quain and Martin Lester (born April 30, 1926 in Marple , Greater Manchester , Great Britain ; † March 11, 1982 in Chichester ) was an English author who, under his own name and several pseudonyms, works in the fields of Science -Fiction and also in those of the children's book , the essay and the detective novel .

Life

Gainful employment

Cooper left school at age 15, became a worker, and then went into administration. In 1944 he switched to the merchant navy as a radio operator. After the Second World War he worked as a teacher of English and art.

He worked as a journalist for the British Iron and Steel Research Association in 1960/61 and for the Federation of British Industries in 1962 and as a salaried writer for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey from 1962 to 1966 .

Cooper began discussing science fiction for the Sunday Times at the height of his popularity in the 1970s and continued to do so until his death.

Marriages and children

Cooper married Joyce Plant in 1946, who had three sons and a daughter. In 1963 he married Valerie Makin; from her marriage there were two sons and two daughters. 1980 followed a marriage with Dawn Freeman-Baker.

Artistic creation

Cooper's first novel, Deadly Image (later re-released under the title The Uncertain Midnight ; dt. Uprising of robots , 1961), was completed in 1957 and published 1958th A short story by him from 1956, Brain Child (German: The Wunderkind , 1965), was processed in the film The Invisible Boy (1957; German SOS spaceship , 1957).

Death and afterlife

Cooper's popularity began to wane after the rise of the New Wave in science fiction in the late 1960s. This was likely due to its attachment to the tradition of John Wyndham and John Christopher , which was rooted in the early 1950s. But he made it partially - z. B. in The Overman Culture (1971; Eng.
