Josef Prinke (born May 3, 1891 in Brüx , Austria-Hungary , † June 26, 1945 in Prague ) was a German-Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator.

Josef Prinke was born as one of the six children of a gamekeeper who was murdered by a poacher in 1907. For material reasons, he could not afford to attend high school. He was drafted into military service in 1911 and was seriously wounded on the Serbian front in November 1914 during World War I. Until 1917 he was in the Prague hospital. During his convalescence he received Rudolf Steiner's work “How to get knowledge of the higher worlds”, which deeply impressed him. He decided to study painting. As a war invalid, he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under August Brömse in 1918 . After graduating in 1921, he remained a supporter of Steiner's anthroposophy. He visited Steiner in Switzerland around 1923. Back in Prague he opened a painting school. He showed his works in 1920, 1922, 1925, 1928 and 1937 at the exhibitions of the Art Association for Böhmen in Prague's Rudolfinum .

Josef Prinke died after the Second World War as a result of his stay in a concentration camp. His wife Agnes brought some of his works to Germany when they moved. The 244 remaining works are in the collections of the Prague Literature Museum .
