Josef Puchta

Josef Puchta (born March 14, 1954 in Altötting ) is a German science manager and was commercial director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg from 1996 to 2019 .

Life

Josef Puchta studied economics at the universities of Augsburg and Erlangen-Nuremberg. As a doctoral scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation, he spent several months researching in Canada in 1983 and 1984. There he also laid the basis for his empirical dissertation on administrative control in Canada, which he received with the grade "summa cum laude" for Dr. rer. pole. completed. During this time he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Comparative Political Research at the University of Oldenburg. Then in 1987 he took over the management of the planning, coordination and public relations department of the German Foundation for International Development (DSE) in Berlin. From 1989 he worked in the Senate Department for Economics and Technology of the State of Berlin. In February 1992 Josef Puchta took over the function of the administrative board of directors of the newly founded German Institute for Nutrition Research in Potsdam-Rehbrücke, together with his colleague Christian Barth as scientific director. After almost five years in office, he was appointed to the commercial director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg in August 1996. Until 2003 he was withHarald zur Hausen on the Foundation Board. From 2004 to 2015 he formed this together with Otmar D. Wiestler , from November 2016 to December 2019 together with Michael Baumann.

He is married, has two grown children and lives near Heidelberg.

Teaching and teaching assignments

From 1984 to 1987 he was a lecturer at the University of Oldenburg (topics: parliamentarism, administrative control, methodology and comparative political research). Since 2002 he has been teaching technology transfer and management at the Center for Science Management at the University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer. He has also been teaching the basics of management and business administration at the University of Applied Sciences in Mannheim since 2004. As part of his longstanding commitment to the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, he was appointed honorary professor at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences in 2011. His teaching activities focus on the basics of business administration and management (with a focus on science management).

  • Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Blue List Scientific Association (today: Leibniz Association) (1995–1996)
  • Member of the board of the BioRegion Rhein-Neckar-Dreieck eV (1997–2013)
  • Member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) (1998–2000)
  • Member of the Presidium of the HGF and guest member of the Senate of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) eV (2000–2003)
  • Deputy Speaker of the Commercial Boards of the HGF Centers (2001-2003)
  • Member of the evaluation team for innovation management at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) (2002)
  • Member of the Steering Committee of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg (since 2004)
  • Chair of the expert commission for the evaluation of the Brussels office of the HGF centers (2007)
  • Chair of the working group for the establishment of the Helmholtz Leadership Academy (2006)
  • Member of the advisory board of the DKFZ spin-off Apogenix GmbH (since 2007)
  • Member of the advisory board of HI-STEM gGmbH (Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Research and Experimental Medicine), a joint venture between the DKFZ and the Dietmar Hopp Foundation (since 2010)
  • Member of the board of the Albert and Anneliese Konanz Foundation for the benefit of the University of Applied Sciences in Mannheim (since 2012)
  • Chairman of the Administrative and Management Advisory Panel, which supports the management of FAIR GmbH and GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in the merger and reorganization of the administrative and management functions (since 2015)

Josef Puchta is a major supporter of the German-Israeli Administrator Conference, which will take place for the 15th time in 2015. Every two years, executives from the DKFZ, Heidelberg University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the Weizmann Institute of Science meet alternately in Germany and Israel. In addition, Josef Puchta also built up today's “Exchange Program for Administrative Managers and Executives”.
