Otmar Dieter Wiestler (born November 6, 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German physician, professor at Heidelberg University and President of the Helmholtz Association since September 2015 . Before that, Wiestler had been chairman of the board of the German Cancer Research Center since 2004 .

Career

From 1975 to 1981 Wiestler studied at the University of Freiburg . He received his license to practice medicine in 1981. He then worked until 1984 as an assistant doctor in the Neuropathology Department at the University of Freiburg, under the direction of Paul Kleihues and Benedikt Volk . In 1984 he also received his doctorate summa cum laude in Freiburg . For three years he was a postdoc at the University of California at San Diego in the field of pathology with Gernot Walter . From 1987 to 1992 he was initially an assistant doctor and later a senior physician in the neuropathology department at the Institute for Pathology at the University Hospital Zurich with Paul Kleihues. In 1989 he headed the department ad interim . In 1990 he was in Zurich for the Department of Pathology habilitation . From 1992 to 2003 he held a chair for neuropathology (C4) at the University Hospital Bonn and was director of the Institute for Neuropathology.

From 2002 to 2003, Wiestler was also the medical director of LIFE & BRAIN GmbH in Bonn. On January 1, 2004, he succeeded Harald zur Hausen as Chairman and Scientific Member of the Foundation Board of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg . He held this office until August 31, 2015.

He has been President of the Helmholtz Association since September 1, 2015. In 2019 he was re-elected for a second term until 2025.

His personal commitment to stem cell research in Germany made him known to a wider public.

  • since 2015: Member of the Board of Trustees of the German Cancer Aid
  • since 2015: President of the Helmholtz Association
  • since 2015: Chairman of the University Council of the Technical University of Munich

Awards

On April 8, 2005, Wiestler received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on the ribbon .

On October 20, 2012, Wiestler was awarded an honorary doctorate (Doctor honoris causa, Dr. hc) in the field of medicine by the University of Tübingen , on October 22, 2014 that of the Medical Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich , and on December 9, 2016 by the University of Duisburg-Essen , in May 2017 the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg .

Publications

Wiestler has made several hundred publications in mainly clinical-neuropathological journals. He is on the editorial board of various specialist journals.
