Josef Reitinger (born May 11, 1922 in Schwarzenberg , Upper Austria; † October 30, 1994 ) was an Austrian prehistorian .

Reitinger studied prehistory at the Universities of Vienna with Richard Pittioni and Innsbruck with Leonhard Franz (1895–1974) and received his doctorate. Since 1953 he has been working as a consultant for prehistory at the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz . The museum owes a reorganization of the archaeological collection to him.

There are about sixty publications by him, some of them very extensive. The prehistory and early history of Upper Austria was his research focus. The late Iron Age was a specialty , and there are fundamental studies on this. Reitinger was also active in bibliography. The research owes him the third volume on the prehistoric and early historical bibliography of Austria.
