Josef "Joe" Resl (born April 13, 1956 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian musician , composer and drummer .

Live and act

Resl received violin lessons from the age of five. From the age of fifteen he played drums . He studied classical percussion in the late 1970s at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and in the early 1980s jazz percussion at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA). He attends master classes with Max Roach and Rashied Ali and completed a master's degree at the Mozarteum Salzburg .

Since 1976 he has been working in recording studios as a drummer, arranger, composer and drum programmer. In the early 1980s he played concerts with the Mukhara Jazz Quartet in Germany and Austria, and a studio LP was also created. In the early 1980s he was a musician and composer for the Linz Schlagwerk- und Percussionsensemble. From 1983 to 1989 he worked with the Austrian pop band Superfeucht , Reunion 2008. During this time, two LPs and several singles were created, which were also successful in the Austrian charts. In 1985 he went on a European tour with Superfeucht together with Falco . During this time he developed his own musical instrument, a shoulder drum kit for controlling digital sounds (walking drum set).

Together with Hubert Bognermayr , he ran the Blue Chip Academy in St. Martin im Mühlkreis from 1989 to 1999 , and headed its digital education department. He is also the composer of the Blue Chip Orchestra (The First Digital Philharmonic Orchestra). The compositions were primarily created on the first digital synthesizer with sampling technology Fairlight CMI . Several CDs were recorded. With this orchestra he played concerts a. a. in Hamburg, Cologne, Seville, Munich, Vienna.

He created several commissioned compositions. In 1995 he opened his own recording studio in Ried im Traunkreis in order to be able to implement his own sound images and compositions. Since 2006 he has been involved in the social project: "Music for old people".

Between 1978 and 2020 Resl worked in the Upper Austrian State Music School as a percussion teacher, music theory teacher and teacher training specialist. He has been dealing with the subject of "web-based instrumental lessons" since 1988. His additionally newly developed concept especially for the combined percussion “percussion and melody” is published by Berklee Verlag Munich. From 2000 to 2013 he taught percussion professor at the BORG Kirchdorf an der Krems .

Resl is married to the elementary school director Angelika Resl and has two adult sons: Philipp Resl (biologist) and Moritz Resl (artist, designer).
