Joseph Rut

Josef Rut (born November 21, 1926 in Kutna Hora ; † October 7, 2007 in Prague ) was a Czech composer, violinist and musicologist.

Rut studied violin with Bedřich Voldan at the State Conservatory in Prague until 1951 and took private composition lessons from 1952 to 1954 with Jaroslav Řídký , and later with Emil Hradecký . From 1953 to 1983 he was a violinist with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. After that he devoted himself primarily to composition. His 57 works include four symphonies, eight instrumental concertos, a Te Deum , the Magnificat et Oratorio Ecclesiastes and chamber music works. The composer Rut was stylistically committed to the twelve-tone technique . He also wrote a number of works on music theory and philosophy, including 2nd Dvanáctitónová tonální teorie (1969), The music and its perspective from the point of view of the theory of relativity (1980), Manual of Rhythm (with Jan Dostál , 1979, 1984), contribution to the clearer Notierung des Rhythmus (1982), Relativistická teorie hudebního pohybu (1990) and Search for Order as the Inspiration for Music Creation - Philosophy of Music (2000).
