Josef Söhngen
Josef Söhngen (born August 17, 1894 in Munich ; † March 12, 1970 ibid) was a German bookseller who was part of the White Rose area .
Life
Josef Söhngen took over the bookstore “L. Werner ”in Munich, which he also directed in 1942/1943.
Söhngen had made his cellar available to the White Rose as a hiding place for the leaflets and also the duplicating machine. In December 1942, he offered Hans Scholl on at a meeting, contact the on Capri living antifascists produce Giovanni Stepanov. However, a meeting did not take place. On March 16, 1943, Söhngen was interrogated for the first time by the Gestapo ; following another interrogation on April 13, 1943, he was arrested. In his first interrogation he had only admitted that Hans Scholl had been a customer for two years and that there had been conversations about the books he had bought.
The trial against Josef Söhngen, Harald Dohrn , Manfred Eickemeyer and Wilhelm Geyer took place on July 13, 1943 in Munich before special court 2 at the regional court; Söhngen was sentenced to six months in prison. It was the day when Alexander Schmorell and Professor Kurt Huber were guillotined to death .
