Josef Schmalz (musician)

Josef Schmalz (born August 26, 1932 in Glogowatz , Kingdom of Romania , † February 4, 2014 in Munich , Germany ) was a German musician , composer , arranger and conductor . He was a member of the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians . From 1978 to 1984, Schmalz was Kapellmeister of the Original Donauschwaben brass band in Munich.

Live and act

At the age of eleven, Schmalz received his first flugelhorn lessons at the Adam-Müller-Gutenbrunn Gymnasium in Arad . He has a brother, CMSgt. ret. John Schmalz. Until 1970 he played flugelhorn and trumpet in his hometown in the local brass band and in the string orchestra under the direction of Anton Hollich . During his military service, Schmalz was deputy director of the ensemble and the brass band (DSGM). In Munich he was a member of the Original Donauschwaben from 1970 , which he headed from 1978 to 1984. As early as the 1970s he celebrated great success with his own compositions.

He had a daughter, Elfriede, who died at the age of 40.

In May 2012 the CD "Danube Swabian brass music of the extra class - Mein Banater Land" with 16 tracks from the pen of Josef Schmalz 'was released. His music is reminiscent of the landscape, the customs and the brass music tradition of the Banat Swabians. The pieces are played by the “Banat Studiomusikanten Karlsruhe” under the direction of Anton Hollich.

Josef Schmalz is the holder of the association badge in gold from the Freundeskreis Donauschwäbische Blasmusik eV for his commitment as a composer, arranger, musician and conductor of the "Original Donauschwaben".

After suffering from cancer for a long time , Josef Schmalz died in the Third Order Clinic .
