The Theoretical Lyceum Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn ( Romanian Liceul Teoretic Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn ) is a German-speaking high school in Arad , Romania . The lyceum is located in the fourth district of New Arad , which is connected to Arad by the Marosch Bridge.

history

German lessons there were in New Arad already in 1725, shortly after the settlement (1720-1722) of Germans in the village. As early as 1725, the schoolmaster Anton Nick was teaching the children of the community in German. In 1768 the head teacher Adam Lévay received a school assistant. Ten years later, in the 1778–1779 school year, 466 students were taught in a classroom. The first stone school building was erected in 1823 on Schul- / Kirchengasse. In 1851 the school received a third and shortly thereafter a fourth teacher.

When in 1940 the entire German school system was subordinated to the organization of the German ethnic group in Romania , the Neu-Arader German grammar school was moved to Arad, where the Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn grammar school was established. After the invasion of the Red Army (1944), all German schools in Romania were banned. It was not until the school reform of 1948 that German-language teaching could be resumed. When Neu-Arad was incorporated into the city of Arad as the fourth district in 1945, the German Lyceum Arad was created .

The school has had many names since German teaching began. Since 1999 it has been called Theoretisches Lyzeum Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn , after the local poet, dramaturge, novelist, founder and director of the Raimund Theater in Vienna (today the Vienna State Opera ) Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn , one of the outstanding personalities of the Banat .

After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , the Roman Catholic Church in Romania applied for the restitution of its property expropriated during the socialist era. In 2005 three of the four school buildings were given back to the Catholic Church. The city administration was responsible for the rent for the school. For years, the school management and the German Democratic Forum have been looking for alternatives.

The Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn Lyceum gave up one of the four original buildings in the summer of 2010 after it was returned to the church, and two more in the spring of 2011. Of the old school buildings, only the building on New Arad's main street, Calea Timișoarei (formerly Bulevardul Karl Marx ) 67, where classes 1 to 4 are housed.

In the summer of 2010, the German-speaking Adam-Müller-Guttenbrunn Lyceum and the general school number 20 ( Romanian Şcoala generala 20 ) from the same district were merged. The two institutions merged into a single school that bears the name of the German Lyceum. It is a question of moral reparation; the general school number 20 had been separated from the German lyceum in Neu-Arad in the 1970s and made available exclusively to the Romanian classes. Now grades 5 to 8 are housed here.

The high school students in grades 9 to 12 moved to two wings of the forestry school ( Romanian Grupul Şcolar Forestier ). The move of the Theoretical Lyceum Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn to the premises of the Forest Lyceum took place on the occasion of the end-of-year celebration on June 17, 2011. The celebrations were held in the presence of the Mayor of Arad, Gheorghe Falcă , the Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Timișoara , Klaus Olazs , and the Chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, Ovidiu Ganț .

School structure

At the moment, the Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn Lyceum has 47 classes specializing in philology , mathematics - computer science and biology - chemistry . School leavers can obtain several school-leaving qualifications in the twelfth grade : the Austrian language diploma, the German language diploma (DSD, level II) and the computer science certificate . A bilingual degree in German and Romanian is also possible.

In the three buildings of the school there are two sports fields with a gym , two IT rooms, a chemistry laboratory , a physics laboratory, a biology laboratory , an earth science room, two language laboratories , and a multimedia room. A total of 1200 students are currently studying at the Lyceum.
