The Mureș in Romania and Hungary

The Mureș ( German  Mieresch or Marosch ; Hungarian Maros ; in ancient times, Greek Μάρισος Marisos or Μάρις Maris , Latin Marisus ) is a river in Romania and Hungary with a length of 761 kilometers (on Romanian territory). It rises at an altitude of 850  m above sea level in the Eastern Carpathians in Harghita County (on the northern slope of the Harghita Mountains on the Tincan Pass ) and then crosses the Mureș County of the same name .

The left Tisza tributary flows through the country in a south-westerly direction. At the border between the Mureș, Alba and Cluj districts , it takes the Arieș ( Aranyos in Hungarian ) from the right and the Kokel ( Târnava in Romanian , Küküllő in Hungarian ) from the left 13 km northeast of Alba Iulia , and enters a plain near Arad where it It forms swamps and flows into the Tisza at Szeged . The lower course is the border river between Hungary and Romania for around 15 kilometers. The river has a catchment area of 27,832 km² in Romania and a water flow of 177 m³ / s in Arad.
