Josef Schmidt (* 1946 in Erlangen ) is a German philosopher and Jesuit as well as a professor emeritus for the philosophical doctrine of God and the history of philosophy at the University of Philosophy in Munich.

Life

After attending the Fridericianum high school in Erlangen, Schmid entered the Jesuit order in 1966 . From 1968 to 1971 he studied philosophy at the Berchmanskolleg in Pullach . He then continued his studies at the University of Munich , majoring in philosophy, with minor subjects in education and evangelical theology (with Wolfhart Pannenberg ).

In 1976 he did his doctorate under Hermann Krings with a thesis on Hegel and Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg . He then studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, from which he graduated in 1980 with a licentiate . He was ordained a priest in 1978. Schmidt has been working at the University of Philosophy in Munich since the 1980 winter semester. After his habilitation with a thesis on Hegel's phenomenology of spirit in 1996, he was appointed professor for the philosophical doctrine of God and the history of philosophy. In 2016 he retired.
