Josef Smektala

Josef Smektala (born February 11, 1903 in Dortmund ; † February 17, 1982 ibid) was a German politician ( SPD , previously KPD ). From 1954 to 1970 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

After elementary school Josef Smektala attended vocational school and from 1917 trained as a lathe operator . He worked in the profession until 1924. In 1919 Smektala became a member of the Christian Metalworkers 'Association, a year later in the German Metalworkers' Association . From 1924 to 1927 he worked as an editor and then until 1933 as an employee of various newspapers. From 1935 to 1939 Smektala was again employed as a lathe operator. From 1939 to 1945 and from 1947 to 1951 Smektala worked as the technical manager of a small business.

In 1920 he became a member of the KPD. After a temporary exclusion from the party between 1928 and 1932, he was then again a member of the KPD and, even after the "[seizure of power [takeover of power]]" by the National Socialists in 1933, he continued the party activities illegally Custody came and was imprisoned in Dortmund, Hamborn and Brauweiler. He was arrested again on November 20, 1937 and not released until July 1938.

After the Second World War, Smektala first rejoined the KPD in 1945, but switched to the SPD in 1950. In 1952 he became executive chairman of the local committee of the German Trade Union Federation in Dortmund. In the 1950s, Smektala was also active as chairman of the Dortmund working committee on the fight against atomic death . In 1959 he became a member of the board of directors and from August 1960 chairman of the State Insurance Institution of Westphalia . In 1968 Smektala became a member of the DGB regional board.

In the state elections in 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966, Smektala was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament as a direct candidate for the SPD in constituency 107 (Dortmund II). He was a member of parliament from July 13, 1954 to July 25, 1970. From March 1, 1956 to July 12, 1958, he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.
