Josef Střecha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Střecha , in Germany from 1941 to 1945 as Josef Strecher (born November 3, 1907 in Prague ; † March 29, 1985 there ), was a Czechoslovak cameraman for German and Czech films and in later years also a film actor.

Live and act

Josef Střecha came to film in 1924, received training in camera technology and started out as a newsreel and documentary cameraman . When his Austrian colleague Viktor Gluck photographed the Austrian silent film Der Monte Christo von Prag in the Czech capital , he brought Střecha to his side. Despite his experience there, the native of Prague was only employed regularly as head cameraman for feature films at the age of 30. In the years from 1939 and especially from 1941 to 1945, when Czech film production in the protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia occupied and annexed by Nazi Germany came to a de facto standstill, Josef Střecha worked, who became Josef Strecher as part of the Germanization of Slavic names had to name, mostly for German film companies such as Bavaria, which the Prague film studios used as an alternative location for their film productions.

His best-known works at the time of the German occupation include the revue film Jenny and the gentleman in tails with Johannes Heesters and the horror comedy Spuk im Schloß . After the liberation, Střecha continued his work as chief cameraman and continued to shoot films until 1971, although these were rarely shown outside the communist country. Josef Střecha then changed his profession within the industry and focused his professional activity on that of an actor in front of the camera. Between 1974 and 1983, when he finally ended his career, Josef Střecha played supporting roles in an abundance of films mostly made for the cinema; his last work, however, was a television series that was broadcast in Germany under the title The Visitors . Střecha died two years later.
