Josef Weichenberger

Josef Weichenberger (born March 10, 1930 in Salzburg ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and Salzburg State Secretary of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions . From 1976 to 1984 he was a member of the Salzburg state parliament and from 1984 to 1989 a member of the Austrian Federal Council .

education and profession

Weichenberger attended elementary and secondary school in Salzburg from 1936 to 1944 and then learned the trade of construction and furniture maker from 1944, completing his apprenticeship in 1947. From 1947 to 1950 he was employed as a skilled worker or carpenter in Salzburg and in 1950 he joined the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions. He was employed as the youth secretary of the ÖGB Salzburg from 1950 to 1962 and then worked between 1962 and 1978 as the ÖGB district secretary for the Flachgau . In 1967 he became state secretary of the “Personal Service” union, in 1978 he changed to the position of education secretary of the ÖGB Salzburg until 1981, where he was also the deputy state secretary of the ÖGB-Salzburg. Afterwards he worked from 1981 to 1990 as state secretary of the ÖGB-Salzburg.

Politics and functions

Josef Weichenberger joined the Socialist Party of Austria in 1948 and began his political career between 1949 and 1950 as regional chairman of the Austrian youth trade union in Salzburg. From 1971 to 1990 he was also a member of the board of the Socialist Trade Union Party (FSG) in Salzburg and from 1972 to 1987 the FSG's parliamentary group manager. Furthermore, he was involved from 1969 to 1990 Chamber Councilor for workers and salaried employees. Within the party, he was active from 1982 to 1989 as a member of the state party executive of the Salzburg Socialists. He was sworn in as a member of the Salzburg state parliament on November 2, 1976, and from 1979 to 1984 he was the deputy chairman of the SPÖ state parliament club. On May 16, 1984 he switched to the Federal Council as a member, where he represented the SPÖ Salzburg until May 2, 1989.

Weichenberger was also founder and from 1947 to 1950 regional chairman of the building and woodworkers union youth in Salzburg and from 1990 member of the board of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor. Between 1962 and 1977 he was involved as a member of the Salzburg-Umgebung District School Council, was Vice President of the Salzburg Civil Protection Association from 1982 to 1988 and a member of the Board of Trustees of the ARBÖ Salzburg from 1983 to 1997. In addition, he was president of the “Safe Austria” board of trustees in Salzburg between 1982 and 1987, and from 1979 to 1986 he was a board member of the Society for National Defense and Security Policy in Salzburg.
