Life

At the end of the 1870s, the director of the Dresden branch of the stoneware manufacturer Villeroy & Boch , which until then had mainly produced so-called “stacked goods”, was looking for ways to broaden the product portfolio. In particular, a greater variety of shapes and a refinement of the colored decorations should bring out a higher value of the Dresden feldspar stoneware. After visiting the Paris World Exhibition in 1878 , the Dresden director wanted to have decorative objects made and in 1880 hired the painter Josef Zeutzius, who had been known to him for many years, as the company's head of decoration.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Tonindustrie-Zeitung reported on a visit to Villeroy & Boch in Dresden, where the guests had the opportunity to see the tile paintings designed by Josef Zeutzius in weather-resistant frit painting (with colors burned in hot fire on sintered plates) on the front furnace hall " to visit.

In total, Josef Zeutzius worked for the Dresden stoneware manufacturer for around 37 years and played a major role in the economic boom of his employer before he died on July 17, 1917 after a short illness at his place of residence in the middle of World War I.
