Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot (born March 26, 1764 in Valencia , † around 1813 in Madrid ) was a Spanish ambassador to the United States .

Life

His parents were Emilia Nebot and Antonio de Jaudenes y Amat.

With the accreditation on May 21, 1785 by Diego de Gardoqui as authorized ambassador, Charles III recognized . from Spain to the government under George Washington in the then capital Philadelphia . The entourage of Diego de Gardoqui included the commercial attachés José Ignacio de Viar and Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot. They issued trade permits with Cuba . Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot was later ordered back to Spain on charges that he had accepted money for free trade permits. Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot lived in Philadelphia in a house owned by John Leamy, an Irish businessman who at times traded intensively with Cuba. In 1794 he married Louisa Carolina Matilda Stoughton, daughter of the Spanish consul in Boston John Stoughton, a longtime business partner of John Leamy. Gilbert Stuart , portrayed him on the occasion of his wedding in 1794.

Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot was accredited on February 12, 1791, together with José Ignacio de Viar, Chargé d'affaires of Charles IV of Spain to the government of George Washington . The joint power of representation was valid until December 1, 1791.

On March 5, 1794, his title was upgraded to Minister Resident . In 1796 he commissioned Giuseppe Perovani for a portrait of George Washington and sent it to Manuel de Godoy , who had it hung in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
