Josefa Menéndez , (born  February 4, 1890 in Madrid , Spain , †  December 29, 1923 in the monastery of Les Feuillants Poitiers , France ) was a mystic and nun in the Society of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sacré-Cœur).

Life

Coming from a humble background, she was drawn to a life in a monastery . As a tailor and eldest daughter, however, she had to work for her family since 1907. Her father died in 1912. In 1917 she entered the novitiate of the Filles Réparatrices du Divin-Cœur for six months , but her mother's lamentations brought her back home. Only when her younger sister was able to take over the household did she move away from Madrid. On February 5, 1920, she entered the Convent of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Les Feuillants, in Poitiers , France .

In the monastery, Josefa Menéndez had visions of the Heart of Jesus for almost four years , of which she made written notes. Her clothing took place on July 16, 1920, and made her first profession on July 16, 1922. Josefa Menéndez died on December 29, 1923. A beatification process has begun.

In 1938, with the permission of the then Cardinal Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli, the biography of Josefa was published by the publishing house of the Apostolate of Prayer (Éd. De l'Apostolat de la prière) in Toulouse under the title Un Appel à l'Amour (Dt .: Love calls) Menéndez, which contains her own record of the visions. This biography and the descriptions of the visions contained therein was translated into several languages ​​and was distributed worldwide. Josefa Menéndez wrote in Spanish and the first version of her biography Un Appel à l´Amour was published in French. The book has appeared in German in several editions, the notes of Josefa Menéndez being directly transferred from the Spanish original, the rest of the text from the French.
