Josep Sabater i Sust

Josep Sabater i Sust (* 1882 in Mataró ; † August 9, 1969 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan conductor and classical pianist. For over forty years he led the orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. As a pianist he belonged to the Catalan Pianist School .

life and work

Sabater was first introduced to music by his father. He then studied cello with Josep Solé , piano with Joan Baptista Pellicer and harmony with Enric Morera at the Conservatori Municipal de Barcelona .

As early as 1901 he was appointed piano teacher at this conservatory because of his outstanding pianistic achievements and remained in this position for twelve years. During this time he also worked as a solo and concert pianist and in chamber music ensembles, performing in Spain and abroad. Soon he devoted himself to conducting opera orchestras. In 1913 he conducted the orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona for the first time . He then remained the conductor of this orchestra for over forty years. He also conducted the orchestra of the Teatro Real de Madrid and theater orchestras in other major cities in Spain, Europe and South America. In 1931 he founded the Orquestra Clàssica with which he gave numerous concerts in Barcelona and throughout Spain.

Personal

Sabater's wife, Margarida Parera, was a respected singing teacher in Barcelona. The daughter of the married couple Rosa Sabater was an outstanding pianist and music teacher.
