life and work

Joan Baptista Pellicer was born in Maó, Menorca. When he was five years old, his family settled in Barcelona. He came to music through the boys' choir of the Sant Jaume Church in Barcelona under the direction of Nicolau Manent . He received his first piano lessons from Pastor Francesc Cardona, his uncle and organist in the parish of Sant Vicenç de Paula in Barcelona. At the age of 14 he began studying at the Acadèmia Pujol . In 1879, when he was seventeen, he won first prize in a youth music competition. He enrolled at the Paris Conservatory , where he was a student of Georges Mathias .

On his return to Barcelona in 1894 he founded the Pellicer Quartet . Besides him, members of this quartet were Domènec Sànchez (violin), Rafael Gálvez (viola) and José de Castro (violoncello) as pianists . This ensemble performed publicly until 1902.

Pellicer took part in the concerts of the Associació Musical de Barcelona (1888-1924), where he performed alternately with Bonaventura Dini or with Pau Casals . In 1895 the Societat Catalana de Concerts interpreted the Simfonia sobre un cant muntanyenc ("Symphony on a Mountain Song ") for the first time under the direction of the composer Vincent d'Indy . Pellicer played the piano part in this concert.

Pellicer combined musical interpretation with teaching. In 1894 he was appointed professor of piano at the Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona . There were among others Amadeu Cuscó , Juli Garreta , Joan Baptista Lambert and Emília Miret as well as Santiago Riera (later professor at the Paris Conservatory), Josep Sabater and the organist Benvingut Socias (later professor at the Conservatori del Liceu ) his students. One of Pellicer's students, the later accordionist Pepeta Sellés , continued her piano studies after Pellicer's death with his son Carles .

Joan Baptista Pellicer had three children: son Carles Pellicer i Boulanger (1896–1983), pianist and music teacher, Emili Pellicer i Boulanger (? –1957), pharmaceutical chemist and professor at the Escola Industrial in Barcelona and Cécile Pellicer i Boulanger (1905– 1992).
