Amadeu Cuscó i Panadès (born February 17, 1876 in Esparreguera , † January 13, 1942 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan pianist , organist , conductor and composer . As a student of Joan Baptista Pellicer, Cuscó is one of the classic representatives of the Catalan school of pianists .

life and work

Amadeu Cuscó entered the Escolania de Montserrat shortly before reaching the age of 9 , where he was trained. In Montserrat he was the organist of the famous monk Manuel Maria Guzmán . In 1891 he went to Barcelona and studied piano with Joan Baptista Pellicer and composition with Enric Morera and Amadeu Vives . He later replaced the organist Robert Goberna of the Barcelona parish of Concepción . In 1901 he went to Sitges as organist and bandmaster and devoted himself to composition parallel to his work as a sound artist.

The four string quartets stand out from his compositional work, one of which, the Quartet in D minor, has received awards from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Institució Patxot . Of his orchestral works, the Poema psíquico from 1928 and the three symphonic preludes from 1930, two of which were premiered by the Pau Casals Orchestra , deserve special mention. Cuscó was also the composer of two masses.

Cuscó died on January 13, 1942 at the age of just 66 in Barcelona. In August of the same year he was honored in the performance of his hitherto unpublished string quartet Mes Claror , which he had dedicated to his student Joan F. Tort (1889–1967). This work was premiered at the Palau Maricel in Sitges. In 1975 Amadeu Cuscó's family gave all of the composer's scores to the Orfeó Català documentation center .
