Joseph-Michel Dutens
Joseph-Michel Dutens (born October 15, 1765 in Tours ; † August 6, 1848 ) was a French civil engineer and economist .
He received his training at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées , a French elite school for bridge and road construction, and made his further career in this branch. His most important achievement as an engineer was the construction of the Canal de Berry shipping canal between 1809 and 1841.
In the field of economics , he was a follower of the school of François Quesnay and the Physiocrats . He published his Philosophy de l'économie politique in 1835 and in 1839 was appointed a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques , one of the national scientific academies in France.
The Joseph Dutens Prize, named after him, is still awarded by the Academy every 5 years to honor scientific work that deals with economics, its history and its uses.
Joseph-Michel Dutens is the nephew of the writer Louis Dutens .
