history

founding

General view of the Schönbach violin-making settlement in Bubenreuth near Erlangen

The foundation was established on October 28, 1948 as a foundation under civil law. Archbishop Joseph Otto Kolb brought it into being at the suggestion of Prelate Georg Meixner and representatives of the Catholic Werkvolk . Through its statute, the Joseph Foundation has been assigned social tasks that have repeatedly been given new focuses in the course of the company's history since 1948. The Joseph Foundation represents the Archbishop of Bamberg's social instrument in the housing sector. The respective incumbents have therefore significantly influenced the development of the company since the foundation was founded.

Foundation purpose

The international student residence St. Augustinus in Erlangen. Erected in 1961 and 1962

The purpose of the foundation is an appropriate and socially justifiable improvement in the supply of housing, especially in the Archdiocese of Bamberg. The foundation is committed to basic Christian values. The purpose of the foundation is to be implemented in a targeted manner by initiating, promoting, developing, implementing and evaluating model projects, measures and concepts in the housing sector, in particular with a social and ecological signal effect.

Settlements for refugees

In the post-war period, living space was made available in particular for displaced persons, refugees and bombed-out people. The first focal points of the Joseph Foundation's residential construction activities were the Ketteler settlement in Nuremberg and the resettlement of Schönbach violin makers in Bubenreuth near Erlangen. By the end of 1954, 3605 apartments had been built.

Housing for students

The original focus of providing apartments for refugee families has changed over time. In 1960, for example, the Joseph Foundation included the construction of student dormitories in its statute. With around 1,650 student apartments in Bamberg, Bayreuth, Erlangen and Nuremberg, the foundation is now the largest private provider of student living space in Northern Bavaria.

Realignment of business activities from 1996

With the new version of the foundation statute in 1996, Archbishop Karl Braun realigned the objectives of the foundation. The promotion of families and single parents moved (again) more into focus. The basis was the family initiative “Zukunft mit Herz” started by Karl Braun. At the same time, the company was geared towards expanding the range of services that accompany living. Against the background of the demographic development, building measures that are adapted to the needs of senior citizens were also increasingly implemented. There is close cooperation with Caritas in this area .
