Joseph Court (colonial governor)
Joseph Court (born July 1, 1881 in Lutzelhouse , † October 13, 1948 in Paris ; full name: Joseph Urbain Court ) was a French colonial administrator. He was governor of Niger and Réunion .
Life
Joseph Court attended the École coloniale in Paris until 1904 . He began his career in the French colonial administration in Senegal and then moved to Morocco , where he caught the attention of Hubert Lyautey . On his recommendation, he became a member of the Reparations Commission in Berlin after the First World War . In 1924 Court first returned to Senegal and then worked in the Ivory Coast and French Sudan . He was appointed governor of the colony of Niger on March 16, 1935. In this office he was replaced on April 29, 1938 by Victor Chazelas . On December 15, 1938, Joseph Court took up his new post as governor of the Réunion colony. During the beginning of World War II , he made particular efforts to ensure the colony's food security and preventive measures in the event of a military attack. Court retired on December 3, 1939. His successor as governor of Réunion was Pierre Émile Aubert .
