From 1906 to 1914 he was a professor at the University of Zurich . From 1914 to 1919 he taught at the Handelshochschule Berlin and from 1919 to 1927 he was a full professor at the University of Göttingen . His works deal with economic geography , the food industry and tax policy. He dedicated the textbook Politics of Foreign Trade (1925) to his doctoral supervisor Lujo Brentano on his 80th birthday.

Esslen dealt not only with the description of economic regions, but also individual branches of industry. He is still quoted today by historians, economic historians, and nutrition experts. In particular his publication on the meat supply of the German Reich: an investigation of the causes and effects of the meat price increase and the means to remedy it (1912) is still used and cited. Despite liberal views, he can be classified in the younger historical school of economics .
