Joseph Farington (born November 21, 1747 in Leigh , † December 30, 1821 in Didsbury ) was a British landscape painter.

Life

Caernarvon Castle , ca.1780, oil on canvas, 52.1 × 72.4 cm

Farington was born in 1747 as the second of seven sons of the clergyman William Farington and his wife Esther Gilbody. From 1763 to 1666 he was a student and assistant to Richard Wilson in London . Farington's talent was shown early: in 1764, 1765 and 1766 he received prizes from the Royal Society of Arts . From 1769 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, which had opened the year before .

On behalf of the publisher John Boydell , Joseph Farington and his brother George traveled to Houghton Hall in the summer of 1773 to make engraving models based on the collection of paintings left by Robert Walpole, which was soon to be sold to the Russian Empress Catherine II . From 1776 he lived in Keswick , where he made numerous topographical sketches, some of which he later transferred to large formats. In the same year he married Susan Mary Hamond. The couple did not have children.

In 1781 Farington went to London with his wife and settled there, but traveled a lot throughout his life - both in his home country and in Europe, where he visited the battlefields in Flanders in 1794, but also maintained close contacts with colleagues. After two years of eligibility, Farington became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1785 and became an influential figure. He made a name for himself as an art expert and broker for art purchases. He is considered an early sponsor of Thomas Lawrence and John Constable .

Farington died in 1821 while visiting his brother Robert's home when he fell down a flight of stairs at the local church.
