Joseph M. Piel

Joseph Maria Piel (born June 8, 1903 in Mörchingen , Alsace-Lorraine , † May 28, 1992 in Trier ) was a German Romanist .

life and work

Joseph M. Piel grew up in Lorraine and Trier and studied Romance philology in Freiburg, Berlin and Bonn. He did his doctorate as a student of Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke in Bonn on The Dialect of Courtisols at Châlons s. M. (Hall 1929). In 1926 he became a lecturer at the University of Coimbra , from 1938 professor of Romance philology there. From 1953 until his retirement in 1968 he was full professor in Cologne, then until 1978 at the University of Lisbon and then honorary professor at the University of Trier. He received an honorary doctorate from the Universities of Coimbra (1951), Santiago de Compostela (1978) and Lisbon (1981). He was a corresponding member of the Academia das Ciências (Lisbon) and the Academia de História (Lisbon) as well as an honorary member of the Real Academia Galega (Santiago de Compostela). In 1954 he was accepted as Comendador in the Order of Sant'Iago da Espada.

In his teaching activities in Coimbra, Cologne, Lisbon and Trier, Piel has given lectures on the historical linguistics of Romania and conducted seminars on the linguistic development - etymological, morphological and phonetic - in Old French / Provencal, Spanish, Portuguese / Galician. In addition, the tutors take care of examiners, doctoral students, assistants and other academic staff. At international congresses, both interdisciplinary and special, he was always involved in commissions and also made countless scientific contributions.

The linguistic history of Portuguese and Galician - from Latin to Vulgar Latin to the first proven linguistic independence, taking into account the Germanic and Arabic contribution - became his specialty, with a special devotion to onomastics and toponomics.
