Joseph Meißner (singer)

Joseph Meißner , also Joseph Meissner (around 1725 in Salzburg ; † March 12, 1795 ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ) and composer.

Life

Meißner, a bass singer with a large vocal range, was court singer in Salzburg from 1747 until his death . He sang in Pisa, Florence, Naples and Rome and in German-speaking countries at the courts of Vienna, Munich, Stuttgart, Liège, Cologne, Augsburg and Speyer. Meißner, who was well known with the Mozart family, with whom he toured several times, was also known for his "affected vibrato" (which Mozart himself called it).

Meißner was from 1751 until her death in 1766 with the musician and composer Maria Caecilia geb. Eberlin married.

Maria Elisabeth Sabina Meißner (1731–1809), court singer in the Salzburg chapel, was his sister. His son Joseph Nikolaus Meißner (1757–1795) was also an opera singer (bass / tenor).
