Joseph Moretti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Moretti (* in the 18th century in Milan ; † May 1, 1793 in Aachen ) was an architect and baroque master builder of the 18th century.

Live and act

Joseph Moretti was probably born in Milan . Other sources speak of Liege or Aachen. Along with Laurenz Mefferdatis and Johann Joseph Couven, he was one of the most important baroque master builders in Aachen and the Maas-Rhine region.

The most important structures include the Hungarian Chapel of Aachen Cathedral and the Klosterather Hof , a former large monastery complex. In Vaals , the Netherlands , he built the clothmaker's house in Clermont in the years 1761–1765 , but the rococo- style parts of the monastery of Rolduc Abbey are also among his works. In the Belgian town of Eupen , the new monastery church in Eupen was built with his help .

Only a few buildings have survived in his home town of Aachen. In addition to the Hungarian Chapel as a side chapel of Aachen Cathedral, the archway of the former Klosterather Hof monastery is located on what is now RWTH Aachen University . Moretti's elaborately built house at 11 Annastrasse no longer exists.

Joseph Moretti died on May 1, 1793 and was buried in the mortuary cellar of St. Follian's Church.
