Joseph "Joe" F. Ossanna (born December 10, 1928 in Seattle , Washington , † November 28, 1977 in Monterey , California ) was an American computer scientist .

Life

Ossanna completed his electrical engineering - studying at the Wayne State University in Detroit , Michigan in 1952 with the Bachelor from.

He then worked at the Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill (New Jersey) . Initially he worked on various basic theoretical projects. Later he was part of the development team for the Multics operating system . Bell Labs gave up this project in 1969.

The team, which included Joseph Ossanna as well as Ken Thompson and Douglas McIlroy , did not want to give up and developed the Unix operating system . To justify the costs of the PDP-11 required for this , Joseph Ossanna developed the Troff typesetting system in 1973 , initially in assembler . 1975 ported to it  C . Joseph Ossanna worked on it until his death. In 1979 the project was taken over by Brian Kernighan, who built it up in a more modular way so that a variety of typesetting machines could be supported.

He died at the age of 48 of a serious heart attack in Monterey Hospital, where he had been admitted for a previous minor heart attack.
