Antigono6 (Joseph Schuster) (role unclear)

Joseph Schuster senior (born June 4, 1722 in Království, Šluknov reign , † November 14, 1784 in Dresden ) was a Moravian opera singer (bass) and member of the ensemble at the court theater of the Dresden Elector.

Live and act

He was born on June 14, 1722 in Království, Lordship Sluknov (Königswalde near Schluckenau), the son of a carpenter. He successfully applied for admission to the chapel boys of the Dresden Catholic Court Church and is recorded in the Jesuit diary on June 3, 1735 as "altista et organista". He is said to have been instructed by the court theater singer Domenico Annibali with the boys' band . He remained a member of the Kapellknaben until June 24, 1740, when he was dismissed as a result of a broken vote.

In 1741 he was hired as a singer at the Saxon Court Theater together with the contralto Sophie Denner and the bassist Biaggio Campagnari for a starting salary of 600 thalers. For 1756 his salary is given as 800 thalers. With that, Schuster earned comparatively little in comparison to his singing colleagues, but also to those of the orchestra.

He died in 1784 at the age of 62.

Joseph Schuster was the father of the later famous Kapellmeister Joseph Schuster (June) (1748–1812), who as a composer in Dresden became better known than his father.

roll

At the court theater in Dresden Schuster took part in many operas by the court composer Johann Adolph Hasse . The first opera for which it is recorded in the cast list was Hasses Lucio Papirio , who opened the carnival on January 18, 1742.

Remarks

  1. For comparison: In the same year 1756 the castrato Domenico Annibali earned 2000 thalers and his castrato colleague Angelo Amorevoli even 3000. The sopranos Caterina Pillaja (2000) as well as Teresa Albuzzi-Todeschini and Faustina Bordoni with 3000 thalers were just as " high earners" . Castrat Angelo Maria Monticelli took the top spot with 4000 thalers. Cf. Moritz Fürstenau: On the history of music and theater at the court of Dresden.
