Joseph Sebastian Grüner

Joseph Sebastian Grüner (born February 15, 1780 in Eger , Bohemia ; † January 16, 1864 there ) was a lawyer and criminal adviser. The homeland researcher of the Egerland was one of the friends of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Life

Grüner, a son of the citizen and hat maker Sigismund Joseph Grüner (1744–1793) and his wife Anna Margarethe geb. Becker (1749–1821), was a graduate of the Latin school in Eger, later a law student at the University of Prague . After completing his studies and working in a law firm in Prague , he was magistrate and criminal councilor in Eger from 1807 to 1864. He met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was on his way to the cure , during his stay in the city of Eger, and a long-term friendship developed. Joseph Sebastian Grüner was a member of the Bohemian Patriotic Society in Prague and the Russian Imperial Mineralogical Society in Saint Petersburg and received the Grand Ducal Weimar Gold Medal for his services to science . After his death, his mineralogical collections came to the museum of the Teplá Monastery in West Bohemia.

Joseph Sebastian Grüner and his wife Theresia Zembsch (1788–1862) had four sons and a daughter from their marriage in 1811. Two of his sons, Josef Ritter von Grüner (1813-1889) and Ignaz Ritter von Grüner (1816-1901) were raised to the nobility in 1875 .
