Joseph Siffred Duplessis
Joseph Siffred Duplessis (also Joseph-Siffrein Duplessis , born September 22, 1725 in Carpentras , † April 1, 1802 in Versailles ) was a French painter. He lived in Rome for four years as a pupil of Pierre Subleyras , after his return to France he mainly painted portraits of members of the court.
His father was a surgeon named Joseph-Guillaume Duplessis who gave up his profession to devote himself to painting. After his first artistic training by his father, he apprenticed with Joseph Imbert for four years. From 1744 to 1748 Duplessis stayed in Rome, where he learned from Pierre Subleyras and continued to befriend Joseph Vernet . Back in his homeland, he first received commissions from aristocrats in the region, in 1751 he went to Lyon and from there to Paris in 1752. It was here that Duplessis must have made his decision to specialize in portraiture. His pictures were only exhibited in public in 1764, in 1769 he was accepted into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture , and in the same year he achieved his breakthrough at the salon . Until 1789 he received numerous public contracts; At the same time, he rose to the Académie, where he was appointed Conseiller in 1780 . After the French Revolution , there were no public contracts. The commission des monuments of the new government commissioned Duplessis in 1794 to catalog the works of art in the Carpentras district and in 1796 he was appointed curator of the museum at the Palace of Versailles . He held this position until his death in 1802.
